Watch those words

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

The words we use… they really are important. I guess we would say that, being copywriters. But, believe us, they can make or break an opportunity.

Take gaff-friendly Paul Denan of Celebrity Love Island fame. TENFOUR read in today’s Metro newspaper that he’s been fired from his lead role in a local Christmas panto because of the words he used at a Christmas lights switch-on. Facing a family audience, he shouted to the crowd “Make some mother******* noise!” Oops.

Then there was the Croatian national anthem at Wednesday’s Wembley match. Instead of singing “Mila kuda si planina” (meaning “You know, my dear, how we love your mountains”), Londoner Tony Henry sang “Mila kura si planina” (”My dear, my penis is a mountain”). An arousing chorus indeed. And, at least one thing to smile about that night.

Keep it simple

Sometimes the obvious really works. In fact, TENFOUR would go so far as to say it’s the best policy is almost all cases.

On our travels we came across a really simple but effective on-street poster. Hanging high and large above a main road, the message said “You’re living proof that posters get read”. Nothing else. No pictures. No nothing.

The advert was promoting outdoor advertising company, Posterscope. A good, simple message, don’t you think?
