The ‘you’ in business

Monday, August 27th, 2007

TENFOUR’s been waffling on about the importance of personality for ages.

We’ve always argued that, when it comes to giving someone business, Jo and Joanne Bloggs will go out of their way to buy from a personality. By that we mean someone they like shopping with - the friendly butcher, baker or candlestick maker.

So, when a business friend of ours - www.thereluctantsalesman.co.uk - told us his theory on marketing and selling, we nearly kissed him. His thinking is that, in general, all businesses have competitors. That’s someone who does the same job… sometimes even for a cheaper price.

But here’s the great thing. No one else employs you.

That means your personality will always be a unique selling point. So, if you’re friendly, passionate, trustworthy and all that, you’re always one step ahead. We’d imagine this works moreso in the case of service businesses. But, saying that, we’re pretty sure your smile will knock ‘em dead whatever your trade. Try it. You might like it.
