Word spot: TV catchphrases

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Stay out of the black and in the red, you get nothing in this game for two in a bed.

You can’t beat a bit o’ Bully, that’s what we say. TENFOUR’s been catching some of the ‘70/80s repeats of the show on satellite TV. We don’t get out much, it’s true to say.

Anyway, it got us to thinking about some of the classic TV catchphrases over the years. What are your favourites? Come on, let us have ‘em.

Tip 12: Examples of work

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

TENFOUR did a short presentation to a group of business breakfast friends the other morning. We woz forced, guvnor!

Anyway, it seemed to go alright. But, one piece of constructive feedback we received from a member - Paul Dutch (from Harold Benjamin) - was that we could perhaps have shown some examples of words we’d drafted in the past.

Of course, TENFOUR thought. It’s the sort of thing that, as copywriters, we advise clients to do all the time. Namely, to show examples of what the company does well in any presentation (e.g. a standing-up-in-front-of-a-room gig, content on a website, or words in company literature).

It goes without saying, for some types of businesses it’s easier than others. But, if you feel it’s possible in your line of work, can you think of any work examples that cover off all the different aspects of your product(s) or service(s)? If so, it’s worth keeping them up your sleeve for the right time. Actually, no… wear them on your sleeve for all to see. Why not? It’s what you do best.

Word spot: Geek

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

TENFOUR’s just received a nice clean piece of direct marketing through the post. It’s for a company called Geek Squad, a 24-hour IT support service linked to The Carphone Warehouse.

From what we can see, well-tuned IT types are on-call to zip round to your house on the back of a bike. That, or work on your computer via a remote link. The mailer was a little tough on the old IT experts, though. “The Geek Squad has arrived,” they say. “No one knows more about technology. Or less about fashion.” Harsh.

Good: Positive charity stories

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

TENFOUR supports The Dogs Trust by sponsoring a rescue dog. They’re a truly great charity and, in our opinion, they send out really effective mailers.

We received one in the post the other day. It told the story of a dog called Weasel who was rescued from the street and rehabilitated. The unique thing about Weasel was that he was born with no ears. The mailer went on to explain how a lot of care and some surgery helped this dog get back on his feet, able to hear again and rehomed with a family.

It got us to thinking that we don’t receive that many positive, good-news stories in charity mailers. We’re aware it’s not always possible to tell a positive story. But, they sure seem effective when they’re told well.
